CANCELLATION

CANCELLATION

We made the decision to cancel the festival.

The deteriorating health situation in recent weeks and the uncertainty of being able to conduct the festival as we would like to share it with you, as well as the heavy moral responsibility of organizing an event with an audience in the conditions we are currently experiencing, pushed us to make this difficult decision.

We will try to find new channels, new ideas in order to present you the works selected for this 12th edition.
We may need to give time to time, but when we meet again it will be to celebrate !

We would especially like to thank the directors.rices for their great patience and understanding, the whole volunteer team of the festival, our partners, as well as our sponsors.

Patron’s award 2019

Patron’s award 2019

Our Patrons of the Documentary Blog have put online for a week one of the three films they awarded at the last edition of the Fidé in 2019. After “J’suis pas malheureuse” by Laïs Decaster and “Je ferai tout disparaître” by Margaux Chataux, it is the turn of the film Azadi by Sam Peeters.

Azadi, short film
Azadi, Sam Peeters

The technical mastery of the film is entirely subject to its narrative, while ideally serving as a description of the tragic situation of some refugees in a transit zone in Lesbos (the Moria camp) that acts as a veritable purgatory. Magisterial moments punctuate the film : an immersive sea shot as a prologue, testimonies of refugees with painful liabilities that are hard to imagine or of Greek fishermen who rescued them, piles of life jackets (reminiscent of Nazi death camps) and wrecks, epitaphs (often anonymous) in a cemetery… Passages of morality that may be questionable for some of the speakers also testify to the geopolitical complexity of our world (“Keep them your beautiful principles !”). I don’t have the means to do so ! “) : a refugee denounces other refugees to the authorities to save them from certain death, an old lady helps refugees on her island in the hope of helping Greece win a Nobel Prize and contribute to bringing her country out of a crisis that has lasted too long… These moments say a lot about the “bankruptcy” of our technocratic world and its narrow-minded cruelty. However, the real stakes of the film rest on its protagonist, Gulfam, a “veteran” of the pains of the world and with Hugolian accents, whom the director tends to mythologize in order to better sensitize us paradoxically to a reality that we may no longer want to see (to avoid being confronted with it)… When the documentary uses a fictional process as a last resort for our empathy, our anchoring to reality wavers… (Derek Woolfenden)

PROGRAMMING :

♢ Voices from within, by Elina Chared
France, 2019, 25′
“I’m a borderline bipolar who hears voices,” says Marianne. This fascinating woman, with her sometimes lost gaze, plunges us into the intimacy of her relationship with what she calls her “voices”. Auditory hallucinations, warning signal or form of consciousness ? One can only admire Marianne’s willingness to show us here the strategies to adopt when these manifest themselves.
[Camille Duranton]

♢ A heritage lodge, by Romain Vallée
France, 2019, 17′
A legacy lodge carries the promise of its title. Romain Vallée suggests that we accompany Elisabeth, a courageous and independent woman in her thirties, when she leaves the casinos to take over the lodge from her mother and grandmother. Contrary to the projections on personal fulfilment through work, the film focuses on Elisabeth’s discourse on the value, the dignity she gives to her place (because the boundary between her work and her social place is thin), and the assumed choice that this radical change of life has been. Romain Vallée contributes to making her a film character by placing her in lively yet sparsely inhabited spaces, whose richness and felting are in themselves already a staging, and to which the subsoil and its machinery, also rich in life, respond. Transmission and filial relationships are at the heart of the second half of the film, which mischievously renders the subtlety of the power relations linked to this transmission, to the point of sharing an eternal youth, thanks to Cloclo .
[Angela Meschin]

Int. Anouchka-Night, by Louise Hansenne
Belgium, 2019, 20′
Anouchka smokes, Anouchka drinks, Anouchka is a screenwriter and it is through the writing of an auto-fiction that she reveals to us the hows and whys of her addictions. Fiction and reality are then mixed in a touching story where two heroines, alcoholic and depressive, fight to follow fragile dreams. What will be the end of the scenario, will there be one ? Anouchka seems to be looking for other answers…
[Camille Duranton]
